Ahhhh! Why didn't the people finish driving out the inhabitants of the land? Was it because they were resisting and it just became too hard? Did they feel pity for these people that God wanted to punish? In either case they were left there with their detestable idols and they were sure to lead the people astray. This angered the Lord and He considered this a breach of their covenant with each other. It reminds me of John 14 when Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him." Several times in the recent reading God has urged them to "fully obey". Not just a little bit. Not just as much as you feel like. Not only when it's convenient. They and we are to "fully obey". Let us all learn this lesson and how God expects this of us.
