In Deuteronomy 13:11 it says talking about the person that tries to get his neighbor to worship idols, "Stone him to death, because he tried to turn you away from the Lord you God, who brought you out of Egypt, out he the land of slavery. Then all Israel will hear and be afraid and no one among you will do such an evil thing again" I think this is one of the clear reasons for stoning. It's a strong deterent. That and the people were holy to the Lord and detestable practices could not be tolerated in His presence.
Lev 19 - 'Do not ... put tattoo marks on yourselves.' wonder if God still doesn't like tatoos today.
