When Joab took revenge on Abner David went to great lengths so that all Israel would know that he had no part in this murder of a man under peaceful conditions.  I think that it is important for those that lead to realize that this must be done so that all may understand that righteousness is what is ruling matters.   Often times false charges are just left to hang in the air and the people doubt and wonder what is truth in the situation.
